MEET OUR MODERATOR:


Amy MacFarlane, CPA, CA, ICD.D

Amy MacFarlane is a strategic leader, corporate director, professional accountant, and educator with experience in the manufacturing, financial, retail, aquaculture, and not-for-profit sectors. She holds a BA in Economics and a BBA in Accounting from Acadia University, as well as a Masters of Education from the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). Amy is a graduate of ICD-Rotman's Directors Education Program. In addition to being an accounting professor in the McDougall Faculty of Business as UPEI, Amy is President and Chair of the Board of PEI Bag Co. Ltd., Chair of the Board of Green Diamond Equipment Limited and External Director and Chair of the Audit Committee of Atlantic Aqua Farms Ltd. Amy has previously served as Director on the Boards of: the Atlantic Economic Council, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Prince Edward Island (CPAPEI), Health PEI, and the UPEI Senate. Previously she spent close to a decade in public accounting with KPMG and Ernst & Young.

MEET OUR FAMILY BUSINESS PANELISTS:

Kevin Murphy, Murphy Hospitality Group

Kevin Murphy is chairman of the Murphy Hospitality Group. Kevin opened his first restaurant, the Barn, in 1980 in Stratford, Prince Edward Island. Over the past 44 years he has built a hospitality company that encompasses 17 restaurants and brew pubs, four hotels, a craft brewery and world-class festivals. Kevin lives by the motto "if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life!" Kevin is also founding partner of Cove Head Bay. Kevin and his wife Kathy were inducted in the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame in 2018. They received entrepreneur of the year for greater Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce in 2019 and in November 2023, they were recognized by Family Business Association - Atlantic. Kevin and Kathy received the order of Canada in 2021 for their work in historical preservation, as well as their contributions to the tourism industry on PEI. Kevin has become a student of the role of succession in family business and the pitfalls that need not happy. In December 2022, Ben, the oldest of their three boys, assumed the role of CEO at Murphy Hospitality Group.

Chad Heron, Cows Ice Cream

Chad Heron is the CEO of Cows Ice Cream. He was born and raised on Prince Edward Island and attended Charlottetown Rural and UPEI pursuing his Chartered Accountant designation. While studying towards this designation, he worked with Grant Thornton in Charlottetown and had the opportunity to learn about many exciting local businesses and the people behind them. Business, and in particular start-ups, has always been an interest of Chad's, which led him to leave PEI and work with a class at Techstars in Boston, Massachusetts. Chad returned home to a position with the provincial government, before transitioning to his current employer, Cows, where he is now the CEO. Chad lives in Mermaid, PEI, with his wife Laura Heron, daughter Julia and two cats. Chad is passionate about PEI and making it the best place to live and raise a family.
